Echoes is a story about Mallory, a high schooler who lives with her younger brother and her ex-Marine father, who sufferes from PTSD. Mallory is a hacker in a secret group called The Forum, where she hacks under the alias echosix. Mallory hacks as a stress reliever, to get away from her stressful and drab life. She’s content with everything for a while but soon, hackers from the Forum start disappearing. This opens up a whole new can of worms as Mallory finds herself trying to solve this mystery.
The Goods: I really enjoyed this story. It took me a second to really get into because I’d consider this novel a thriller, and that’s not a genre I typically gravitate toward. But, I was intrigued by the plot and found myself invested in the characters. The story has a mystery element and although I had ideas, I wasn’t really sure how mystery would be solved. In the book, it’s pretty obvious that Mallory suffers from OCD, but I like how it’s not explicitly stated in the novel. I also loved that Mallory was definitely flawed, and not this super confident, super heroic protagonist. I’ve said on my YouTube channel that although I love the bold and brave heroines, sometimes it’s nice to see a main character that’s sensitive, flawed, or meek.
The Not-So-Goods: One thing that tripped me up with this novel was some of the dialogue. Laura lives in England, and although Mallory lives in Connecticut, there were some phrases/spellings that suggested that someone who lives in England wrote the novel. (i.e. ‘realise instead of realize’) and the quotations marks were like ‘this’ instead of “this”. These aren’t huge issues, though.
All-in-All: I give this book a 3.75 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed it, and I would for sure recommend it to someone who loves a good thriller. Although it did take me a few chapters to get into the groove, I flew through the second half of the book and found myself thinking about Mallory’s wellbeing after I finished the novel.
