2018 + January Goals and My Word of the Year

Happy 2018!

I hope everyone has had a great start to the year. I had a great NYE – I spent it in church with my fiancé – but admittedly, the start to my year was a little crazy (not in a good way), and that’s an understatement! Things are turning around now, as they always do, but lets just say i’ve had better first weeks of January 🙂

I’ve spent most of the last weekend of 2017 goal setting in my Powersheets, which I’ve been doing every year since 2015. I HIGHLY recommend them! I’ve blogged about them here and vlogged about them here. It’s not really a planner, but a Life Coach in a Book. You take a lot of time to think about who you are right now, who you’re striving to be, what’s the most important to you, and what will matter the most to you when you’re 80. From there, you carve out yearly goals and create a tending list, which consists of daily, weekly and monthly goals. I’m not even doing the product justice, so check it out here if you want to learn more!

I want to start doing goal posts again, so here’s a big one with a recap of my yearly goals from 2017. I know I fell off with monthly goals last year, but with the wedding coming up, bookish things, and so many other changes, I want to start them up fresh again!

A look back on 2017:

2017 was a great year for me! I met OPRAH (!!!), got engaged, got a literary agent, met Gucci Mane, and had a great family beach trip, among so many other things! Of course, there were plenty of hard days in between, but the year was overall was such a blessing. Let’s see how I did on my 2017 goals:

  • Read the Bible more frequently
  • Finish re-reading the Harry Potter Series
  • Read MORE
  • Expand Booktube Channel

  • Write and Send another manuscript
  • Write 30 minutes a day
  • Step back from Freelance Writing

  • Be more Financially Responsible
  • Listen to God
  • Lose (more) weight + become healthier
  • Explore New York
  • Stop Procrastinating
  • Connect with Loved Ones (brunch dates, actually text people back, etc)

It looks like I did an okay job with my bookish goals! I read the Bible more with the help of this Write the Word journal (although I would love to read the Bible in chronological order one day, maybe with the help of this book. Has anyone ever read it?) Even though I did not meet my Goodreads goal, I read 15 books last year. I expanded my Booktube channel by reaching 5K subscribers!

With writing, I got a literary agent so I count that as my biggest win! My manuscript looks a lot different now than when I sent it in- in a good way. This book has been very challenging to write, but I know I’ll feel so relieved when it’s done. It’s a story I really want to tell!

I’ll admit that living in NYC has not really lended a lot to being more financially responsible (honestly, we were all just trying to make sure our rent was paid on time!) but I did lose some weight, explored NYC with a few broadways shows and other things, and listened to God, although you can never do that too much. However, I still procrastinate and don’t connect with my friends as much as I should.

Alright, now on to my goals for 2018!

  • Read 25 books this year.
  • Host 5k Giveaway on my Channel
  • Create a BookTube Schedule

  • Put two manuscripts on submission
  • Organize my brand

  • GET MARRIED! Have a beautiful wedding and cultivate a beautiful marriage with Rob
  • Stay on top of finances
  • Become more organized
  • Be a Blessing to others + Continue to grow in God’s Word
  • Become Leaner and Stronger
  • Become intentional with spare time

When doing my Powersheets, the question came up of what three things you want to focus on this year. I chose Significant Other, Finances, and Career, with an asterisk by Spiritual and Personal Growth, because I feel like that goal always deserves some focus. I feel like my 2018 goals reflect that. Some of them are really vague, but I’ve created action steps I can turn into monthly, weekly or daily goals. My reading goal last year was 30, and I only read half of that. I’m doing 25 books this month, because that’s basically 2 books a month and that HAS to be doable, espeically with my goal of being more intentional with my spare time. For me, that’s less scrolling on social media and more reading or spending time with loved ones.

I hit 5k on my channel a little before I moved out of NYC ( I STILL need to blog about that!) And I have yet do film the proper Q&A + Giveaway video. I also want to do more writing focused videos.

I’ll be honest about my writing goals: in my Powersheets, I wrote secure two book deals, but I decided to also make it something I can control, which is polishing 2 manuscripts and putting them on submission.

Getting married is a two part goal, because I want to plan a beautiful and memorable wedding, but I also need to be planning for a MARRIAGE. A wedding is only one day! I would love any resources you married peeps have out there 🙂

My word of the year is ABUNDANCE. I have to admit, I went back and forth on this goal and still feel like it’s a word I have to grow into. I chose it because it means plentifulness of the good things of life; prosperity, but something about it almost felt gluttonous. Then I thought: have you ever prayed for something and asked God to JUST fix such and such? I want to pray for all God has for me, so that I can be a great witness and blessing to others! If I have more, I can give more. A lady recommend this verse to me Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us -Ephesians 3:20, and that solidified my choice for my word of the year!

Okay, now for January goals 🙂

  • Send Save the Dates + Bridesmaid Proposals
  • Book wedding photographer
  • Arrange hotel block for wedding guests
  • Go dress shopping! 🙂
  • Write/submit two freelance articles
  • Polish manuscript and send to agent
  • Read two books

For someone who’s getting married THIS SPRING, I’m embarrassingly behind on a lot of things. Luckily, I already have my venue, caterer, and officiant (my own grandad!) This month, I’m putting the petal to the metal, and hopefully by the time I publish this post, I’ll have crossed some of these things off my list.

I also have a LOT of blog posts coming for y’all! I did a 3-day Juice Cleanse, I still need to talk about Leaving NYC, Combatting Writers’ Block and wedding posts as they come. If there’s anything specific you want to see, just let me know!

Cheers to a great year!

  1. Hi India, I loved seeing your progress on your 2017 goals and peeking into your goals for this year. Best of luck on them, although I’m sure you don’t need it! Abundance is an amazing word- especially in the sense of gratitude for all that we have. Great post! 🙂

  • I’ve partnered up with @letstalkYA and @freeform books to share a REALLY BIG book haul on my channel that includes this beauty, #TheEverlastingRose. 🌹 The link is in my bio! I can't wait to curl up with this book! Y'all know I am a huge fan of The Belles. Have you started this series yet?
  • These are the books I read in January (I’ll be sharing the books I read in February on my channel soon!) I didn’t plan on only reading books with blue covers. 💙 I really enjoyed all three of these books and two of them became 5 star reads for me. Have you read any of them?
  • This week was such an exciting one for THE FORGOTTEN GIRL! R.L. STINE, the author of the GOOSEBUMPS books, blurbed my novel!! He says "This ghost story gave me chill after chill. It will haunt you." 😱👻 WHAT! I received more exciting news that I can’t share yet, but can’t wait to. ✨ I’m just so thankful. 🙌🏽🙏🏽
  • “One can't stay sad very long in such an interesting world, can one?” 💗 I finished Anne of Green Gables in January and it became an instant favorite. It put me in a reading slump bc I wanted to read something exactly like it when I was done! Anne is such a lovable character and I feel like we have the same view on life. This is a classic, character driven story with beautiful descriptions that makes you feel like you’re going through Anne’s life with her. Have you read it? What other books give you the same feelings as this one? #AnneOfGreenGables
  • I turned in second pass pages for #TheForgottenGirl this week, so here’s a tiny sneak peek. 😍 Look at the chapter headings! ✨
  • Very cheesy selfie to tell you that I have a new video on my channel featuring the books I read in January and what I’m reading this month! Also this @olay sweatshirt is one of my favorite work-from-home shirts, ever. 📚
  • @buzzfeedbooks included me in their round-up of books by Black authors not to miss this year, along with so many other authors I admire! ☺️🙌🏽! The Forgotten Girl is for the young and young at heart. It isn’t available for preorder everywhere yet, but I’ve seen it on Amazon, Books-a-million, and IndieBound so far! 💙
  • Today being Langston Hughes’ birthday and the first day of Black History Month has me feeling really inspired to create. I wrote 2k words on my new project and I’m feeling really good about them! January was a great month for me, I hope February is even better. ✊🏽✨I took this picture at the Langston Hughes House with @i_too_arts in 2017! What are you working on today?
