I’m going to an Aspiring Authors Workshop!

If you’ve seen my latest youtube video, you’ll know that I was accepted into the Madcap Retreats Inaugural Aspiring Author’s Workshop!!

This workshop will be held in a lodge in Tennessee for a week in March. Forty aspiring authors (including myself) will attend different panels and sessions with YA authors such as Maggie Stiefvater, Victoria Schwab, Dhonielle Clayton, Renee Adieh and soooo many more wonderful women.

I found out about the opportunity on Twitter and I applied on a whim, not wanting to get my hopes up, even though I had a good feeling about it. I found out I got accepted two weeks ago and I was so surprised!

I feel so blessed to have this opportunity and I can’t wait to meet all of the other aspiring authors and learn from all of the wonderful YA authors that will be there!

Although I will be all ears at the workshop and will be taking notes intensively, trying to soak as MUCH information in as I can, I will try my best to blog my experience, or at the very least, take some pictures. 🙂

I want to start reading the books I haven’t read by these authors. I already own The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, but I have no clue where to start with Victoria Schwab’s books. I know some people have suggested The Archived or Vicious. What do you recommend?

Are any of y’all residing in Tennessee? Have any of you ever visited the mountains there? if so, I would love some travel tips (especially the best way to get here, I’m definitely having trouble deciding if I want to fly or take a train!)

I will keep y’all posted! 🙂

  • I read this amazing anthology back in February — @wellreadblackgirl: a collection of essays edited by @guidetoglo, written by Black women, on the first time they saw themselves in the pages of a book they’ve loved. I’ve read and loved so many books as a child and have related to many characters, but I don’t think I really saw myself reflected racially in a book until my teenage years (except maybe Jesse from the Babysitters Club books?) For me, I always wanted to feel happy when reading, and the books presented to me about Black girls where always sad and/or dealing with slavery. I knew we were worth having more stories with happy endings too, and that thought fuels my writing to this day. ✨ Do you remember the first time you saw yourself in a book?
  • Thank you so much to @disney for gifting me this cute package to celebrate #marypoppinsreturns! It’s out now on digital, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray. These books are so adorable! Have you read them or watched the movie yet? ☂️
  • I’ve partnered up with @letstalkYA and @freeform books to share a REALLY BIG book haul on my channel that includes this beauty, #TheEverlastingRose. 🌹 The link is in my bio! I can't wait to curl up with this book! Y'all know I am a huge fan of The Belles. Have you started this series yet?
  • These are the books I read in January (I’ll be sharing the books I read in February on my channel soon!) I didn’t plan on only reading books with blue covers. 💙 I really enjoyed all three of these books and two of them became 5 star reads for me. Have you read any of them?
  • This week was such an exciting one for THE FORGOTTEN GIRL! R.L. STINE, the author of the GOOSEBUMPS books, blurbed my novel!! He says "This ghost story gave me chill after chill. It will haunt you." 😱👻 WHAT! I received more exciting news that I can’t share yet, but can’t wait to. ✨ I’m just so thankful. 🙌🏽🙏🏽
  • “One can't stay sad very long in such an interesting world, can one?” 💗 I finished Anne of Green Gables in January and it became an instant favorite. It put me in a reading slump bc I wanted to read something exactly like it when I was done! Anne is such a lovable character and I feel like we have the same view on life. This is a classic, character driven story with beautiful descriptions that makes you feel like you’re going through Anne’s life with her. Have you read it? What other books give you the same feelings as this one? #AnneOfGreenGables
  • I turned in second pass pages for #TheForgottenGirl this week, so here’s a tiny sneak peek. 😍 Look at the chapter headings! ✨
  • Very cheesy selfie to tell you that I have a new video on my channel featuring the books I read in January and what I’m reading this month! Also this @olay sweatshirt is one of my favorite work-from-home shirts, ever. 📚
